Drugged and drunk, cops reveal the May haul

POLICE nabbed 121 drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol during a month of targeting in May.

Police-car-0574-175x175During the month-long targeting campaign, 96 drivers were caught driving over the legal alcohol limit and 25 were caught with a positive indication of drugs in their system, with some results pending final confirmation by a laboratory test.

Traffic Operations Officer in Charge Susan Ball said she was disappointed those motorists chose to risk their safety and the safety of others.

“It’s disappointing that anyone would get behind the wheel when they’ve had too much to drink – it’s dangerous for themselves, their passengers and everyone else on the road,” Sgt Ball said.

“Even more disappointing is the concerning number of drug drivers on our roads. Our message to them is – don’t do drugs, don’t do drugs and drive. If you do, we will catch you.”

Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team’s Sgt Richard Dauth said police would target driver distraction during June.

“One of the biggest driver distractions is the use of mobile phones and, as the cold Canberra weather sets in, frosted and iced windscreens,” he said.

“We’ll be targeting any kind of driver distraction, from mobile phones, frosted windows, eating and drinking to drivers distracted by pets or children in the car.”
