Queanbeyan wins top-park award

QUEANBEYAN’S recently transformed Queen Elizabeth II Park has been awarded the Parks and Open Space Award at the 2017 Landscape Architecture Awards – its third accolade.

More than 70 projects were entered in the NSW Awards, across categories including civic landscape, urban design and infrastructure.

The park has previously shaken off competition as tough as Centennial Park in Sydney to win the NSW Park of the Year at the 2017 Parks & Leisure Australia Awards for Excellence and is the first recreational park to achieve an “Excellent” rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia.

Instigator of the project, former mayor of Queanbeyan City Council and candidate for the upcoming Queanbeyan-Palerang Council elections, Tim Overall, says he couldn’t be more pleased.

“When you think back to the terrible state of it before, now we have a wonderful, inviting area for families, visitors, and residents alike. It’s another fantastic addition, better linking our CBD to our beautiful river,” he says.

Reopened by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove in December, Mr Overall says the redevelopment was always intended to further enhance opportunities for community activities and events.

“We’re continuing to improve upon the park as well and the next addition is the installation of shade sails, which will be occurring from August 28.

“The next part of the vision is to see a riverfront walkway and pedestrian bridge further linking these CBD spaces.”
