Gardens fully open after hailstorm damage

Staff member clearng up at the gardens.

THE Australian National Botanic Gardens are now fully open after damage was caused by the Canberra hailstorm on January 20.

Gardens staff said this morning (February 7) that visitors would now be welcome to explore the gardens and patronise the Pollen Café, Jindii Eco Spa and the Botanical Bookshop.
But general manager Peter Byron said that many of the plants and buildings had been damaged as a result of the storm.

“Over the coming weeks,” he added, “our staff will continue the clean-up efforts from the damage the storm had caused, but the whole of the site is now open and we encourage people to enjoy a walk, a picnic and relax in this special place.”

He assured the public that staff had undertaken all necessary measures to remove hazards.

Pathways had been cleared and would now be accessible by motorised
scooters, prams and wheelchairs.

The Gardens Flora Explorer tours will remain out of operation until further notice but the Gardens free guided walks will continue daily at 11am and 2pm.
