FORMER Wallabies and ACT Brumbies captain David Pocock will switch sport for politics after announcing today (December 17) that he’s running for the Senate in the upcoming federal election.
Pocock, 33, who has lived in Canberra since 2012, is hoping to wrest one of the ACT’s two seats from the major parties who currently hold one each.
Should he succeed, the former flanker would become the ACT’s first independent candidate elected to the Senate.
In announcing his senate bid today, Pocock said via facebook that he needs 1500 people to join his political party so he can be listed above the line on the Senate ticket.
Pocock, who is known for his environmental activism, will be concentrating his campaign on the platform of climate action, agricultural conservation, political integrity and social justice.
Earlier this year, constitutional law expert Kim Rubenstein announced she’s also running as an independent Senate candidate for the ACT.
