TWO Canberra hospitals have been recognised for “excellence” in the treatment and care of stroke patients.
Canberra Hospital (Canberra Health Service) and Calvary Public Hospital were awarded the Australian Stroke Coalition Quality Stroke Service Excellence Award, at the 2022 National Stroke Quality Improvement Workshop held in Melbourne today (October 20).
Ten other hospitals also received the award which recognises best-practice stroke clinical care, including treatment with thrombolysis within 60 minutes of hospital arrival, and the provision of a discharge care plan.
Stroke Foundation CEO, Sharon McGowan, said:
“This is an exceptional achievement that should be celebrated and used as the benchmark for others to work towards in future,” she said.
“These hospitals demonstrate the impact of multidisciplinary teams working together to improve outcomes for patients with stroke.
More than 27,400 Australians every year will have a stroke for the first time, and there are almost 450,000 people living with the effects of stroke in the community.
Some of the other hospitals to be recognised for stroke care include Townsville Hospital, Echuca Regional Health, Wimmera Base Hospital, and the Mater Hospital Brisbane.
