‘Country Roads’ are calling Darren

HELEN MUSA looks over the arts horizon to see what’s in store for Canberra. It’s “Arts in the City”.

DARREN Coggan, the boy from Wagga Wagga best-known for his show about Cat Stevens and winner of two Golden Guitars, returns to his country roots with “The Poems, Prayers and Promises of John Denver”, singing songs such as “Take Me Home Country Roads”, “Rocky Mountain High” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. “GUESS How Much I Love You” is a play for children aged three years and up by Richard Tulloch, adapted from the books by Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram. In the show, complete with puppetry, Little and Big Nutbrown Hare discover the magic and colour of the seasons. At Canberra Theatre, June 3-4. Book at canberratheatrecentre.com.au 

“DREYFUS Drei” is a short documentary by Australian Jewish artist Ella Dreyfus, who set out to uncover her family’s history with her uncle George in Melbourne and her cousin Jonathan in Berlin. There’ll be a free screening, Q&A and reception hosted by the German embassy and the ANU Film Group, at Kambri, ANU Building 153, from 5.30pm on June 1, registration at eventbrite.com.au

NEWS from Four Winds at Bermagui is that Matthew Hoy, already the artistic director, will take the reins as the Easter festival’s creative director, replacing Lindy Hume, who has been curating the event for two years. 

IN “Der Doppelgänger”, bass Jack Stephens and pianist Ronan Apcar join Luminescence to present German lieder by Schubert, Strauss and Wolf. ANU Drill Hall Gallery, Acton, Friday, June 3. Book at eventbrite.com.au

CANBERRA Spinners and Weavers annual exhibition, with the great title of “Warped and Twisted”, will showcase members’ work, with some items for sale. At Canberra Textile Works, 70 Maclaurin Crescent, Chifley, 10am-3pm, June 3-12.
