Duo arrested for string of alleged car thefts

A MONCRIEFF woman and Watson man have been arrested following a series of alleged car thefts across Canberra.

The arrest came after one of the stolen vehicles, a silver Hyundai Elantra which police believe had been used during the commission of other crimes, was observed by police in Belconnen on June 18.

Later that day in Gungahlin, the driver failed to stop when directed to do so, and the Elantra was found a short time later abandoned in McKellar. Police seized it for forensic examination.

On Saturday evening (June 25) police located the man, a 39-year-old, and woman, 28, at a residence in Moncrieff. The woman was arrested immediately, and the man was arrested about an hour later after a negotiated surrender.

The man will answer to charges of driving a motor vehicle without consent and breach of parole.

The woman will face charges of riding in a motor vehicle without consent, three counts of obtaining property by deception, one count of making off without payment and breach of an intensive correction order.
