Monarchists debunk new Republican model

PHILIP Benwell, chair of the The Australian Monarchist League has dismissed the new model for a republic as “deeply flawed”.

He was responding to the release today (January 12) of the Australian Republic Movement’s “Australian Choice” model for a republic.

“The Australian Monarchist League is delighted that the Australian Republic Movement has, after over 20 years, at last produced a model,” he said.

“However, although their model is called the ‘choice model’, the people actually have no choice over whom they are voting for as only politicians will decide on the candidates which rather defeats the purpose of having a national vote.

“The model is deeply flawed as it will serve only to empower politicians not the people.”

When talking of a republic, it’s the model that matters
