World-class cutter has a real flair for hair

Hairdresser and educator William Petterson… “I specialise in all aspects of cutting hair, everything including afros.”

William Petterson, who has cut and styled hair around the world for almost two decades, has now brought his talents to Axis Hairdressing right here in Canberra.

WILLIAM Petterson, who has cut and styled hair around the world for 18 years, has joined Axis Hairdressing,
in Braddon.

William, from Glasgow, Scotland, has taught and mentored in the hairdressing industry in London, Russia, Europe and Australia.

“I specialise in all aspects of cutting hair, everything including afros,” says William who began his career in hair at 16 years old.

“In the UK, mostly we focus on either cut or colour, and I was pretty good at the cut side of things, so I basically learnt to cover all aspects, specialising in everything that you are able to cover.”

He says he brings his fresh approach to everyone who walks in the door.

“It’s about problem solving and suitability,” William says.

“My thing is creating something that’s going to be manageable for the client, because at the end of the day we can have our clients in the salon chair and can make them look amazing, but the important thing is when they go home and do their own hair, it has to look amazing then.

William says that his passion for hair came from his mum, who is a hairdresser and has her own salon, although William has never worked with her: “I’ve always tried to build myself up. I’m fortunate, and I’ve worked hard. I’ve done hair shows and hair exhibitions and all that, which is cool. I absolutely can’t complain.”

William’s top tip for clients to get the best out of their hairstyle? Use products.

“It’s crazy how many clients don’t use products at home, and expect the same result as you get here. Every single person in here uses products before they blow-dry hair, that’s how we get the hair to look as good as it does. Something so simple as products can make a big difference in styling your hair at home.”

William says that his move to Canberra and joining the highly-awarded team at Axis Hairdressing has been a very positive experience.

“At Axis, the standard is high, the team is good, we have a lot of fun, and it’s a nice, easy atmosphere.”

Established in 1991, Axis Hairdressing is an award-winning team.

William prides himself on being exceptional at what he does. He says salons have brought him in to help lift and build the standards in newer members of staff, and he says that in the past he has guided people into winning awards such as Australian Hairdresser of the Year and Educator of the Year.
