A new body scanner has been installed at the ACT Corrective Services Court Transport Unit to reduce the need for strip searches when detainees enter custody.

The ACT government says the scanner is expected to begin operating in coming weeks, subject to approvals under the Radiation Protection Act 2006.

The installation follows the introduction of two body scanners at the Alexander Maconochie Centre in 2023, alongside changes to search policies and procedures.

Strip searches at the prison fell from more than 4000 in 2020-21 to fewer than 600 in 2024.

Corrections Minister Caitlin Tough says the new scanner should further reduce strip searches while maintaining safety for detainees and staff.

Strip searches may still be required if a detainee refuses a body scan or a concealed item is detected and not surrendered.
