ACT nature reserves shut for kangaroo operations

The ACT Government says an operational target of 3633 kangaroos has been set for removal across 15 ACT reserves and the Googong nature reserves in NSW.

Fifteen ACT nature reserves will be closed overnight for almost eight weeks as part of the ACT Government’s annual kangaroo management program.

The closures will apply from June 9 to July 31 between 6pm and 6am from Sunday to Thursday, with reserves reopening during the day and on weekends.

ACT Conservator of Flora and Fauna Bren Burkevics said the program was intended to reduce grazing pressure on endangered native grasslands and grassy woodlands.

Mr Burkevics said monitoring had found 72 per cent of surveyed grassland areas were below the target grass height range, up from 44 per cent the previous year.

The ACT Government says an operational target of 3633 kangaroos has been set for removal across 15 ACT reserves and the Googong nature reserves in NSW.

The program will also continue trials of the GonaCon contraceptive vaccine, which the Government says may help reduce future culling requirements.

Reserves affected include Mount Ainslie, Mount Majura, Red Hill, Mulligans Flat, The Pinnacle, Isaacs Ridge and Goorooyarroo, among others.

The ACT Government says deer found in ecologically sensitive areas of Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura may also be removed during the operations.

Entering a closed reserve during operational hours is an offence under the Nature Conservation Act.

So this Gov. is now going to start shooting deer too?

What about the feral foxes that are decimating urban chooks and possums in Lyons and Curtin. I been told foxes are a protected species in Canberra. If so why?

I understand why many people feel distressed about the kangaroo cull. Seeing native wildlife harmed can be deeply upsetting. At the same time, land managers argue they face difficult decisions balancing animal welfare, ecosystem health, and biodiversity. Meaningful dialogue requires acknowledging both compassion for kangaroos and broader environmental concerns.

‘Kangaroo Operations’ ! Operational Target!
Please stop desensitising the actual act of killing and maiming individual animals with official sounding language.

I as an enviromentalist wrongly thought that native species are protected? Yet here in Canberra foxes rule the roost lol. Chickens and possums, lizards, frogs etc allowed to be mauled. Yet I and others are not allowed to catch any fox. If so then not allowed to release them. So to stirr up the issue. Lets feed the foxes with pet food etc. As some say foxes keep possums numbers in Braddon under control. So is this some sort or a form of biological control method in use regarding native species? Rangers have been contacted by Woden Landcare about fox issues. Yet appears foxes are allowed to rule urban roost. Also I dont own any chooks, yet noticed no more tat tat tat at night from a possum. So……..

This is so, so, wrong. Disgusting behaviour yet again by our local government. And now they’re going to kill deer as well.

I can’t face walking in my nature reserve at the moment. Hate this time of year… feel so powerless, no-one listens or cares

I live in the US and this is disgusting. Their language is obviously demeaning the murder of over 3600 living creatures , for eating . Average humans.
