Canberra Airport has proposed a new covered stadium near Commonwealth Park, arguing a city-centre venue could bring major sporting events, concerts and visitors into the heart of Canberra.
The proposed site at Regatta Place is on Commonwealth land and includes Archbishop’s House and adjoining car parking, with Canberra Airport saying discussions with the Catholic Church have been positive and are continuing.
The airport is proposing an all-event venue inspired by Christchurch’s recently opened Te Kaha stadium, which has a capacity of 25,000 to 36,000 and was delivered for about A$531 million.

Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron says the proposal would take advantage of light rail and the concentration of hotels, restaurants and bars in Civic.
The airport will now test the concept through architectural design, construction costings and an independent economic and social impact assessment. It says it is willing to contribute to developing the proposal but is not seeking ownership or an ongoing financial interest in the stadium.

The proposal has won support from Liberal Senate candidate Nick Tyrrell, who is calling on federal Finance Minister Katy Gallagher to meet Canberra Airport within a month and consider Commonwealth involvement.
Tyrrell says any proposal would still need to stack up on cost, transport and impacts on nearby residents.
Property Council ACT executive director Ashlee Berry also welcomed the proposal, saying a city stadium could attract major events and support hotels, restaurants, retailers and other businesses.
Canberra Business Chamber chief executive Greg Harford says the Commonwealth Park location deserves serious consideration, while Canberra Liberals Leader Mark Parton has also backed a city stadium and accused the ACT government of allowing the project to stall.
