An ACT Legislative Assembly committee has recommended appointing a Night-Time Economy Commissioner to help revitalise Canberra’s dining, bars, entertainment and arts scene.
The multipartisan committee wants the commissioner to develop and implement a dedicated Night-Time Economy Activation Strategy, similar to arrangements in NSW and Queensland.
The committee has also recommended stronger support for businesses affected by ongoing light rail construction in Civic, including measures such as means-tested rent relief.
Independent Kurrajong MLA Thomas Emerson, who has advocated for a night-time commissioner since the 2024 election campaign, welcomed the recommendations.
“Local venues and creatives need a champion within government whose job is to work collaboratively with them to enliven our city at night,” Emerson says.
He says the role should be filled by someone with industry experience who can address obstacles facing businesses without adding unnecessary bureaucracy.
The ACT government’s submission to the inquiry opposed establishing the position, although then Night-Time Economy Minister Tara Cheyne expressed openness to the proposal during public hearings.
Emerson says the recommendation reflects strong support from industry stakeholders and wants the government to adopt it.
His supply-and-confidence agreement with Chief Minister Andrew Barr includes a commitment to a support package for Canberra’s night-time economy.
