Falls and strenuous or repetitive work accounted for more than half of accepted workers’ compensation claims in ACT small businesses over two years, according to WorkSafe ACT data.
Of 1386 claims accepted in 2023-24 and 2024-25, 389 involved body stressing injuries caused by activities such as lifting, carrying and repetitive movements, while 323 resulted from falls, trips and slips.
Construction recorded the most claims of any industry, accounting for 35 per cent of the total.
WorkSafe ACT is urging small businesses to identify and manage hazards that can lead to these injuries, including slippery or uneven floors, obstructed walkways, repetitive movements, heavy lifting, awkward postures and exposure to vibration.
Businesses are advised to eliminate hazardous manual tasks where possible through better work design or automation, or reduce risks through measures such as mechanical aids and rotating repetitive tasks.
