AFTER a short break, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra continues its Australian Miniseries program with the premiere of “The Innocence of Life”.
Composed by Ella Macens and performed by CSO’s principal oboe Megan Pampling, the work, Macens says, “explores the magic, beauty and fragility of new life, and the feeling of love that sweeps over us when we welcome a new soul (or two!) into the world.”
Macens is a fast-emerging composer whose works fuse elements of her Latvian heritage with a love of popular and classical music.
Her work has been commissioned and/or performed by groups such as the Sydney, Tasmanian, Canberra and Willoughby Symphony Orchestras, the Goldner and Flinders String Quartets, The Song Company and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.
She has recently completed a new work for the Flinders Quartet and is preparing to write a new work for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with their 50 Fanfares Project.
Something of a legend in Canberra, Pampling has been the CSO Principal Oboe since 2006. After studying at the Victorian College of the Arts, she appeared as an oboist for the Melbourne, Tasmanian and Sydney symphony orchestras and has also toured Europe twice with the Australian Youth Orchestra as principal oboe and spent two years in Switzerland studying with Thomas Indermühle.
