Artsday / ‘Good Folk’ swings into action

Chloe and Jason Roweth perform songs and poems by Henry Lawson at “Good Folk”.

THE National Folk Festival and Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council are hosting “Good Folk”, with 22 concerts at three different venues over Easter. All concerts will be ticketed with covid-safe restrictions in place. The artists will perform at The Q, the Royal Hotel and the Queanbeyan Bicentennial Hall. There’s also a free two-day session at Campbell & George. Good Folk, April 3-4, book here

The Queanbeyan Hive.

QUEANBEYAN Hive is launching fringe folk festivities for Easter with Bec Taylor and the Lyrebirds, multi-instrumentalist Bec’s alt folk-pop project, supported by Lucy Ridge and the Derby Widows. 274 Crawford St, Queanbeyan, 6-9pm, Friday, April 2. Book here.

THE next day, Saturday, April 3, also at The Hive, live bands, ensembles and solo artists like Danny Velnaar, Indie Quirky, Woodhead, Jenny Spear, O’Neil’s Folly and Fiddling The Books will be playing throughout the day every hour from 10am. Tickets are $10 at the gate. Food and drink available.

The Sound Shell at Barragga Bay

FOUR Winds Festival’s amphitheatre, the 2,000-person outdoor Sound Shell, will be home to the coastal music event over Easter. Barragga Bay, Bermagui, April 2-4. Free shuttle buses available from Bermagui. Book here.

“A Taste of Ireland”.

FEEL-GOOD Irish music and dance feast, “A Taste of Ireland”, with a company of more than 20 leading Irish dancers and musicians as well as new sets, costumes, tunes and effects, is coming to the Canberra Theatre, 7.30pm, April 3, book here or 6275 2700.

“Coalescence No.1” by Benjamin Shine.

DEFINING Moments” is an exhibition of new works by multidisciplinary artist Benjamin Shine, best known for his pioneering work in tulle, which centres on ideas of energy, impermanence and the relationship between the spiritual and the superficial. Grainger Gallery, Building 3.3, 1 Dairy Rd, Fyshwick, until April 12.

Canberra Milk.

NEW exhibition “Don’t Forget The Milk” celebrates 50 years since the ACT Milk Authority was established in Canberra. Featuring an array of objects from Canberra’s dairy history as well as a giant mascot cow, sporting jerseys and a Canberra Milk goal-post protector, the exhibition explores the history and progress of the dairy industry in Canberra, as well as the role Canberra Milk plays in supporting community organisations and local sporting teams. Canberra Museum & Gallery, Civic Square, opens Easter Saturday, April 3, open over the Easter weekend, 10am-5pm with the CMAG café open 10am-1pm.

“Swainsonia Formosa” (Sturt’s Desert Pea) by Jann Ollerenshaw.

“FROM the Desert to the Sea”, the 14th annual exhibition of the Friends’ Botanic Art Group will open on April 3 at the Australian National Botanic Gardens’ visitor centre, then run until May 2. The exhibition comprises work using a variety of mediums including watercolour, coloured pencil, graphite and scraper board, and all artworks are judged by a team of botanists from the Gardens and a panel of accomplished botanic artists before being hung.
