Designs revealed for ‘home-like’ eating disorder facility

DESIGNS for the ACT Residential Centre for eating disorders have been revealed, with a focus on providing a “home-like” environment.

Mental Health Minister Emma Davidson unveiled the draft designs last night (August 25) for the Centre’s preferred site in Coombs.

Coombs was chosen for its closeness to nature reserves, with an outlook over green space and a pond, but also in a residential setting, to ensure a calming environment with necessities close by.

ACT Health officials and Minister Davidson visited Queensland’s Wandi Nerida facility in July – an operational residential eating disorder facility – to “draw from their learnings on how to best support people on their recovery journey and commence the next stage of more detailed designs”.

Minister Davison said the Centre will aim to provide specialised support for people with eating disorders, their families, and carers on their recovery journey in a stepped-care model.

“The Centre will provide a more intensive, residential service for people who may sit between low-level community care and acute clinical care.”

The establishment of the Centre is being supported by a Commonwealth Government commitment of $13.5 million over the years, with the first funding instalment provided in the 2021/22 financial year.

A development application is due to be submitted later this year. If approved, the Centre should be completed in 2023/24.
