THE Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) has called for ACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury to step down following his refusal to launch a review into the territory’s sentencing and bail laws.

It comes as new police data revealed the ACT is on track to record its highest ever number of breaches of bail by offenders in a single year.
AFPA president Alex Caruana has accused Mr Rattenbury of putting the rights of offenders and convicted criminals above the right of the community to feel safe.
“If bail and judicial outcomes were as shipshape as [Mr Rattenbury] asserts, then an independent review would demonstrate that,” said Caruana.
“The AFPA knows that he knows there are issues, and that they are beyond his capability to address.
“If the Attorney-General doesn’t want to be a leader and have the difficult conversations, then he must step aside. The ACT needs an Attorney-General who is accountable and transparent, and willing to put their own ideologies aside for the betterment of the entire ACT community.
“If he can’t put the community above his own ideologies, then he needs to resign.”
