Migrant stories in theatre workshops

IF you have an immigrant background and have a story to tell, you could be very interested in a series of workshops coming up at Belconnen Arts Centre.

Artists in residence at the centre from February 6 – 23, Camilla Blunden, Liliana Bogatko, Raoul Craemer, and Noonee Doronila, calling themselves The Threads Collective, will be revisiting their play “Destination Home” with free open session theatre workshops.

I first saw the piece in 2011 at The Street Theatre, where the group developed it over a period of 18 months as part of its Made in Canberra season.

Now the four actor-creators want to explore the potential of the piece at a more grass roots level. The piece was originally “verbatim theatre,” telling of their own experiences  – two of them were refugees and two were migrants with Australian partners.

At the end of each performance during the season they found that many people stayed to talk with them  and tell some of their own stories.

Their idea is to rework it into a play that strongly promotes the richness of life experiences and creativity of people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

They are interested in your stories of migration and your responses to their play.

The workshops and the residency will finish up with two final readings of the piece, using the input from those who attend the workshops.

Theatre workshops are on February 7, 13, 14, 20 from 6.30 to 9pm, February 14, 10am to 12.30pm, and February 9, 16, 1.30pm to 5pm

For more details contact info@belconnenartscentre.com.au or 6173 3300. Cost for workshops: free; final readings: $5.
