Around the galleries

• KIDS take note. Canberra Museum and Gallery has an intriguing pair of exhibitions in “Mirror” life-like collage constructions exhibition telling the stories of two young boys in different cultures by children’s book illustrator Jeannie Baker, until May 20, and “Look! The Art of Australian Picture Books Today”, until June 10. At CMAG, Civic Square.

 

• “HABITAT”, an exhibition of etchings, ink drawings and lithographic collages by Sacha Jeffrey, celebrates “difference” in the graphic tradition. At Soju Girl restaurant and café, Melbourne Building, Northbourne Avenue Civic, until May 28.

 

• ANOTHER cool, urban venue showing serious art is Artespresso restaurant, Giles Street, Kingston, which is also a registered art gallery. Right now it’s showing portraits by Jonathan Wheeldon of Aboriginal people from Anindilyakwa on Groote Eylandt.

 

• “ILLUMINATED Musings” is a quiet exhibition by Susan Hey and Margaret Kalms exploring nature in encaustic (hot wax) paintings using layers of wax, paint, collage and objects, and nature-based biblical verses with photography and montage. The National Gallery of Victoria recently acquired one of their collaborative pieces. At Strathnairn, Stockdill Drive, Holt, 10am-4.30pm, Friday-Sunday, until April 15.

 

• IN “Toes in the earth, Eyes on heaven”, Local artist Sue Marks uses mixed media, acrylic, and textiles to celebrate the sustainable garden from earthly and heavenly perspectives – most images comes from her own backyard. At Tuggeranong Arts Centre, 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday; 1pm-4pm, Saturday, until April 28.

 

• LOCAL artists from mixed cultural backgrounds, Surya Bajracharya (Nepal); Nida Bangash (Pakistan); Dionisia Salas (Spain/Chile); Marzena Wasikowska (Poland); Yoko Yamaguchi (Japan) and Michal Glikson, are exhibiting works illustrating “how art circles… overlap all over the world,” as ACT Multicultural Arts Officer Jorge Bagnini puts it. Meantime, Canberra multi-cultural memorabilia is on show as “Hidden Treasures”. Both are at Belconnen Arts Centre, until April 22.
