NOT only the title of writer/director Leslye Headland’s film evoked somnolence in me.
Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) leave college after a platonic friendship. Twelve years later, when they rediscover each other in New York, she’s polyandrous and he’s a genial womaniser.
The film spends time with Lainey and Jake having sexual encounters but not with each other. That’s fine. Polyandry and polygamy may cross moral boundaries or breach social conventions but they are optional. Lainey and Jake lock emotional horns when locking other parts, but might have delivered more satisfying results. The film talks a lot about the mechanics of sex without, as you might be not surprised, displaying what is, after all, merely body bits doing what body bits do when their owners mutually decide that the time is right for such interactions.
Lainey and Jake will ultimately do what we know from the outset they should have decided to do with each other or perhaps with other others. The film spends about 100 minutes waiting for that outcome. Ho hum.
