Greyhound racing ‘deserves a fair go’

THE greyhound racing industry claims 400 participants from the ACT with about 50 people depending on it for their livelihood, according to Shadow Minister for Gaming and Racing, Mark Parton. greyhound

The ACT greyhound racing industry has been alive in the Canberra community for 37 years without an animal welfare breach.

Parton says the Labor-Greens Government is going to arbitrarily and unjustly condemn a legitimate and long-standing ACT sporting industry without any evidence or charges of wrongdoing.

“It will be victimised on the basis of prejudice and ignorance alone. The ACT greyhound racing industry has contributed to the diversity of leisure and sporting pursuits in the Canberra community for many years now,” says Parton.

“There is no record or evidence of any breaches committed or charges laid against the Canberra greyhound racing club. Even a former Minister has been reported as saying there is nothing wrong.

“The ACT industry is strongly regulated and maintains standards of animal welfare with its code of conduct, operations and activities transparent to the public.

“It deserves a fair go and should be given a fair go.”

I commend the Canberra racing club on their record, but the truth of the matter is the commodification and exploitation of innocent living creatures for profit id morally, and increasingly economically wrong. That is the central issue here.

The Canberra racing club can follow each and every regulation to the letter and greyhounds will still be injured and killed for so their owners can make a few dollars off their efforts. That is a cruelty no amount of regulation can erase

I am a Board member of Grey2K USA Worldwide, an organization that fights to save these marvelous creatures all over the globe. (you can learn more about us here: http://www.grey2kusa.org.) I have fostered and adopted rescued racing greyhounds since 1995. I cannot imagine abandoning any of them when they become injured, old or sick and yet this is routinely what happens to them at operating tracks.
