Picnic at Lake Burley Griffin to support World AIDS Day

TOMORROW (December 1) on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin Canberrans are invited to share a community picnic to support those living with HIV and promote HIV prevention. world-aids-day

This picnic will mark World AIDS Day and the AIDS Action Council executive director, Philippa Moss says the National Carillion and the Kings Avenue Overpass will be lighted in red to remind us all that HIV and AIDS is still relevant today.

This year will be the 28th local celebration of World AIDS Day since it begun in 1988.

Moss says: “World AIDS Day is more relevant than ever before in the ever-changing landscape of HIV prevention and health promotion.

“It is notable that no Australian jurisdiction has recorded a declining trend in ‘The Kirby Institute’s Annual Surveillance’ report released this year, which also shows that new HIV diagnoses have remained stable over the past four years.

“It’s alarming that HIV notifications among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are double the rate of non-indigenous people, emphasising the need for better targeted health promotion strategies and more testing and treatment to close the gap.”
