West Basin boardwalk construction underway as City to the Lake gets started

FENCING will be installed at Acton Park this week in preparation for the construction of a boardwalk on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin.

City to the Lake Acting Director Nicholas Holt said the start of construction coincides with the end of Floriade, which will see traffic conditions along Commonwealth Avenue return to normal.

“The boardwalk will improve access to Lake Burley Griffin,” Nicholas said.

“The generous boardwalk allows for fast and slow moving pedestrians, as well as seating for the community to reflect and admire the view.

“Recreational lake users will also have a place to berth watercraft to access the waterfront precinct.

“Construction will start at the southern headland of West Basin, adjacent to Commonwealth Avenue bridge.”

Work includes:

  • A 150m-long precast concrete boardwalk. It will be 8.1m wide and positioned just above the water level.
  • A protected cove providing recreational lake users a place to berth watercraft.
  • A sculptural marker, highlighting the lake water axis between Black Mountain and East Basin of Lake Burley Griffin.

The southern car park on the corner of Albert Street and Barrine Drive in Acton Park is closed, and will be used as a site compound. Public parking will continue to be available in all other car parks at Acton Park.

Standard construction hours for the project will be 7am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Some work may occur on Saturdays 7am to 1pm.

To minimise disruption to the community during construction a range of mitigation measures have been taken to control noise, dust and lake water quality.

Additionally, footpath diversions will be in place enabling people to continue to run and cycle around Lake Burley Griffin. For more information please visit citytolake.com.au

Construction of the West Basin boardwalk will not impact usual business at Westside Acton Park.
