Body found in search for missing skier

A BODY has been located in the search for a skier missing in the state’s Snowy Mountains region today (September 6).

The discovery comes after 23-year-old Canberra man Andrew Seton went missing in Kosciuszko National Park on the weekend. He was last heard from when he contacted his family at 10am on Saturday, advising them of his plans to ski the backcountry of the park.

When he failed to return or make further contact by the end of the day, officers from Monaro Police District commenced inquiries into his whereabouts.

On Sunday a search commenced of remote parts of the Kosciuszko National Park, which continued yesterday.

The large-scale coordinated aerial and ground search involved specialist police from the Alpine Operations Unit, PolAir, the State Emergency Service (SES), and National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

PolAir located a person in a remote area of Watsons Crags yesterday afternoon. Due to steep terrain and hazardous weather conditions, both PolAir and another emergency service helicopter were unable to land or use winching capabilities.

The operation was suspended for the day and resumed today with the arrival of PolAir carrying specialist police trained in alpine rescue.

The officers were winched down to the ground, where the body of a man was located.

The operation continues to retrieve the body. While it is believed to be the body of the missing skier, he is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
