AN 18-year-old man required surgery after being punched in the face at a Summernats event in Mitchell over the weekend.

The incident occurred at about 10.30am on Saturday (January 8) in the northern side of the grandstand at the Exhibition Park in Mitchell while the man watched the Summernats burnout competition.

After a short altercation with another man unknown to him, the 18-year-old was punched in the face. He required surgery to his jaw as a result of the assault.

Police are searching for the man allegedly involved in the incident. He is described as Caucasian in appearance, approximately 170cm tall, slim build, dark hair shaved on the sides, tattoos on his arms and neck, wearing light coloured shorts, white t-shirt and thongs.

Police believe a large number of people witnessed the incident, and are asking anyone who did so, and who has not yet spoken to police to come forward.

Anyone with information or footage that can assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
