Mowers roll out to give Canberra a fresh cut

CANBERRA’S very own new rapid response mowing team is set to roll out to lengthy grassed areas in the suburbs from today (September 1).

The ACT Government have dedicated $1.2 million to the 10-person-team, who are equipped with a new electric mower and 12 normal mowers, growing the mower fleet to 81.

The mowing program will run from September until March 2023, with suburbs getting a fresh cut every four weeks, and main roads every five weeks.

Mowers are set to cover 68 hectares each mow.

Unacceptably grassy areas can be reported via Fix My Street, leading to an inspection to determine whether it will get the rapid response treatment or falls under the regular scheduling.

All mowers have received a pre-season mechanical servicing, including a test of their GPS systems that will capture data on mowed areas and upload the information to a live map that will be available from Monday.

Wow, the ACT Government finally worked out that grass starts to grow in spring time – and also needs to be mowed in spring time! I give them 10/10 for effort, let’s see how it works out in practice!

I would be interested to see the cost of the shiny new ‘electric mower’ compared to a non-electric (regular one). Will the electric one mow all day or is there down time with it needing several hours every day recharging? Can it be used in all terrains environments or is it limited in performance? How does it compare?? – feedback from the team would be good in several months (not just Government spin). BTW – I assume we talking about a ride-on as seen in the picture – not a push one.

Will they make sure they leave the paths clean? The last few years the mowers have started leaving grass clippings all over the footpaths, where they use to blow the grass off. This leads to the grass drying out on the footpaths, becoming slippery and causing falls. The whole mowing team need to do better.
