THE ACT Opposition say they will call for the resignation of Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury if he does not conduct a full review into the territory’s sentencing and bail laws.
Shadow Police Minister Jeremy Hanson said Mr Rattenbury’s position on the issue is “untenable” following new calls from Labor backbencher Marisa Paterson to launch a review.
In response to petitions by Tom McLuckie, who recently lost his son, Matthew to a speeding driver on the wrong side of the road, Paterson said “I do also support your call for a review of sentencing in the ACT…the community should feel confidence in these decisions – particularly around judgements for serious criminal offences.”
It comes amidst mounting pressure on the Attorney-General from the Australian Federal Police Association, the Director of Public Prosecutions and victim’s families who have all criticised the current state of the laws.
“Backbenchers in his own government are calling for [a review] to be done,” said Hanson.
“If the Attorney-General still refuses to conduct a review into sentencing and bail by the time Mr McLuckie’s petitions are tabled in the Assembly, the Opposition will immediately call for Mr Rattenbury’s resignation or removal and will move a motion of no-confidence in him continuing as Attorney-General.”
