VISITORS to Canberra during the recent school holidays saw tourism numbers rebound to pre-covid years, the ACT government says.
Between July 2 and 17, hotel occupancy in Canberra was up to 87 per cent, slightly higher than the same school holiday period in 2019.
The government says national attractions helped to bring tourists in, including “Shakespeare to Winehouse”, “Connection” at the National Museum of Australia, “Ceremony” at the National Gallery and the Kanga Cup.
Winter in the City was also popular, estimated to have brought in more than $1.4 million in expenditure between July 1 and 17. The event offers an open-air ice skating rink, exhibitions, pop-up bars, ice sculpting, food vendors, marshmallow roasting and a winter concert.
More than 12,000 ice-skating tickets we sold, with 25 per cent of attendees visiting from interstate.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said: “It’s clear we’re seeing strong signs of tourism industry recovery in Canberra. This is being led by leisure travel, with people eager to travel again, visit family and friends, and get back to attending events and visiting attractions.”
