Seniors urged to come out to play

Jenny Mobbs… “Some studies have shown that staying physically and mentally active in later life can reduce your risk of dementia.”

SENIORS are being urged to shake off winter, get out of the house – and come out to play.

With spring just around the corner, COTA ACT has partnered with the University of Canberra to present “Never Too Old to Play Outside” at Haig Park, midday-4pm, on Saturday (September 3) with a range of activities, games, entertainment and information.

“Getting outside to try new games, sports or activities, such as gardening can both boost cognitive functioning and also reduce loneliness and isolation,” says COTA CEO Jenny Mobbs.

“Some studies have shown that staying physically and mentally active in later life can reduce your risk of dementia.

“Come and join us for a new type of seniors’ outdoor fun. COTA ACT is bringing its PlayStations for Seniors activities to the Haig Park Play Outside Day program.

“Come as a group or come alone. Just come along. There will be plenty of food, games, music (live bands), activities, information and conversations. There will also be fire-pits, marshmallows and mulled wine – to ward off the last of the winter chills.”

The benefits of being outdoors are many for older people and include:

  • Increasing Vitamin D
  • Reduce the symptoms of depression
  • Prevent some types of cancer
  • Build strong bones
  • Promote sleep
