Slumped driver blows seven times over limit

A MAN found slumped over the steering wheel of his car in Civic has blown almost seven times over the limit.

Police say the 43-year-old man was spotted by a member of the public slumped over his steering wheel at a set of traffic lights in the CBD last night (September 1).

The man was seen to have sat through several traffic light changes before driving slowly through the city and at times on the wrong side of the road.

The member of the public then followed the driver and contacted police.

The driver returned a positive breath test at the scene, and later returned another reading of 0.331 – almost seven times over the legal 0.05 blood alcohol limit.

ACT Road Policing, Acting Inspector Travis Mills said he was “horrified” by the incident.

“This is not a case where someone has made a small miscalculation and chosen to drive, this is a deliberate – even foolhardy – decision that has put many lives at risk,” Acting Inspector Mills said.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to the member of the public who reported this matter, this person may well have saved lives last night.”

The driver was charged with high range drink driving, and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
