Driver charged over Gungahlin cyclist deaths

A 40-year-old woman has been charged over a collision that killed two cyclists and injured another on Gungahlin Drive last month.

Police say the woman was driving a Hyundai Accent that collided with a group of five cyclists about 6.20am on August 27.

A 32-year-old woman died at the scene, while a 39-year-old man was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died on September 3. Another cyclist was also taken to hospital following the collision.

Following an investigation by the Major Collision Team, police issued the driver with a summons on Friday.

She has been charged with two counts of culpable driving causing death and one count of negligent driving causing actual bodily harm.

My sympathies are with the woman charged over 2 deaths she had absolutely no intention of causing. But one thing we can all agree on though, is that there are no winners in the war between cyclists who put their “rights” to use 80km/h roads used by cars and trucks, over their rights to stay alive and uninjured.

Very sad, lives cut short and ruined. Dare I say it roads were built for cars not bicycles so build more cycle paths and use them.
