Canberra social housing residents have saved an estimated $8.6 million on energy bills since 2023 through electrification and insulation upgrades, according to the ACT Government.
More than 4600 public and community housing properties have received upgrades, with the government putting the average saving at more than $1800 a household.
The program has so far installed more than 1400 reverse-cycle air conditioners, 1846 heat-pump hot water systems and 329,630 square metres of ceiling insulation. The rollout is about 70 per cent complete, with the government aiming to electrify all feasible social housing properties by 2030.
The upgrades are being funded with $47 million from the ACT Government and $20.1 million from the Australian Government through the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative.
The next phase will install rooftop solar and batteries at at least 7500 Housing ACT properties, with the batteries to be connected through a virtual power plant.
