Fibre upgrade rolls out across Canberra

In this sponsored feature, nbn reveals that faster, more reliable internet is on the way as its fibre upgrade rolls out across Canberra.

Canberra residents are progressively gaining access to nbn’s most reliable residential connection as local services are upgraded to full fibre.

Around 97,000 homes and businesses will be able to move from older nbn copper-based technology to nbn full fibre that runs directly to the premises.

The shift away from nbn copper-based technology means eligible homes and businesses could experience significantly fewer dropouts and access wholesale download speeds up to 20 times faster, helping better support how households and workplaces use the internet today.^

The upgrade is part of a national program supported by the Australian Government, replacing older fibre-to-the-node connections with fibre all the way to the premises.

Construction is progressing in stages across north and south Canberra. Surveying and design began in selected suburbs in September last year, with construction now underway Griffith, Red Hill, Narrabundah, Higgins, Holt and Latham and expanding progressively. nbn has appointed Ventia to deliver works in North Canberra and Service Stream in South Canberra. These delivery partners are working on behalf of nbn and will be the teams residents see in their local area during construction.

As works move street by street, residents may notice trenching or under-boring in verges, footpaths and some front yards, along with pit upgrades, conduit installation and surface reinstatement. Temporary construction activity, including noise and minor traffic adjustments, may occur, but impacts are planned, managed and short term.

Most properties will be upgraded without the need for backyard access. In a small number of cases where existing overhead connections are used, access to the property may be required and there may be a brief service interruption while works are completed.

Most households will not need to take action during survey or construction. However, residents can register with their nbn delivery partner to receive updates or co-ordinate access if needed. If residents have questions or preferences about where the fibre will run through their property or where equipment will be installed, they can contact their nbn delivery partner ahead of time to discuss options.

All works are carried out under nbn’s national construction, safety and environmental standards. Delivery partners operate under nbn identification, and nbn works closely with the ACT Government to minimise impacts on trees and public spaces.

^ Speeds are wholesale download speeds nbn provides to internet providers. nbn offers a 2000Mbps wholesale download product on nbn FTTP which can support 20 times faster download speeds compared with existing nbn copper-based fibre-to-the-node and fibre-to-the-curb technology, which have maximum wholesale download speeds of 100Mbps. Service availability, including timing, will depend on phone and internet providers offering the 2000Mbps wholesale download product and is subject to service qualification. Actual speeds achieved depend on a number of factors and may vary, including the age of your Wi-Fi router.
