Koala Airlines has revealed more about its plans to launch later this year, but whether the Australian start-up will fly to Canberra remains unclear.

The airline plans to begin operations with three leased Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, subject to regulatory approvals. The aircraft have reportedly already been secured.

Chief executive Bill Astling told Bloomberg the airline was shifting its focus towards charter operations feeding passengers into international airlines as part of overseas travel itineraries.

The model would see Koala avoid competing directly with Qantas and Virgin Australia on domestic routes.

Mr Astling said he did not expect Koala’s website to sell tickets directly to passengers.

However, in a social media post he said the company remained committed to establishing a “credible third airline alternative” in Australia.

What that means for Canberra is yet to emerge.

Koala has previously released artist impressions showing one of its aircraft flying over the national capital, but has not confirmed any plans to operate services to or from Canberra Airport.
