The Canberra Liberals are calling for a ban on recording-enabled smart glasses and other wearable recording devices in ACT government workplaces, public schools and sensitive public facilities, with exemptions for legitimate uses.
Shadow Minister for City and Government Services Peter Cain and Shadow Attorney-General Chiaka Barry will move a motion in the Legislative Assembly today seeking restrictions on discreet recording and livestreaming.
The proposed restrictions would cover swimming pools, change rooms, early childhood settings and Access Canberra service centres.
Cain says the technology allows people to record interactions without others knowing, raising privacy and safety concerns.
The motion would provide exemptions for legitimate disability, accessibility, medical, assistive technology and educational purposes.
Barry says clear rules are needed to protect privacy without restricting technology that assists people with disability.
The Liberals are calling on the government to report back to the Assembly by the first sitting week of 2027.
