Supported by local dance group Kokoloco and artists Mama MadB and DeWayne Huckle, Multicultural Affairs Minister Michael Pettersson launched the program for the 28th National Multicultural Festival on Friday in Petrie Plaza.

Next weekend’s three-day festival in Civic will feature more than 250 performances around 260 stalls, showcasing music, food and cultural traditions from around the world.

Minister Pettersson drew attention to the performances but equally to the possibility of indulging in a pisco sour masterclass, learning how to make Tibetan momos, or celebrating Swedish Midsummer around the maypole

Headline acts will include Troy Cassar-Daley, hip-hop artist L-FRESH The Lion, the all-female Mexican mariachi band Queen of Hearts, and Solomon Islands singer Charles Maimarosia. Comedians Katrin Praseli, Michael Hing and Anisa Nandaula will also appear.

Other highlights include the MusicACT Takeover featuring Setwun, Citizen Kay and SAMATAR; Embassy Villages with diplomatic stalls and cultural activities; World on a Plate chef demonstrations; and the National Multicultural Festival Parade, to be held on the Saturday.

Family-friendly safe-havens include the Sunflower Space and Families Sanctuary at Canberra Museum and Gallery and at the Seniors Lounge hosted by COTA at the Civic Library.

Licensed venues in the city will be permitted to serve alcohol in open containers until 2am from Friday to Sunday, and free public transport will operate on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm until last service.
