Transport Canberra has released a video showing near misses involving pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and passengers around Canberra’s light rail network as part of Light Rail Safety Week.
The footage highlights how lapses in attention can lead to potentially serious incidents, with people being urged to follow traffic signals and signs and avoid distractions such as mobile phones and headphones around the tracks.
Transport Minister Tara Cheyne said while incidents were rare, near misses demonstrated how quickly dangerous situations could develop. She urged people to stop, look and listen before crossing light rail tracks.
Light Rail Safety Week began on Monday and will also feature safety posters designed by students from Burgmann Anglican School, Daramalan College, Dickson College and Gungahlin College displayed on light rail vehicles.
Thirty-two student designs are also competing for a People’s Choice Award, with public voting open until August 31.
