They called it Nutbush, but it’s about city limits

A record 360 people have taken part in a Nutbush dance in Canberra as part of a Conservation Council ACT Region campaign calling for limits on the city’s urban expansion.

The council said its official counters recorded 360 participants at Saturday’s event, 10 more than the previous Canberra record.

The event was organised as part of the council’s campaign for the ACT government to establish an urban boundary and exclude Canberra’s Western Edge from future suburban development.

Council executive director Simon Copland said breaking the record was secondary to the campaign’s message.

“While we are delighted we have been able to break the record, this event was more about the message Canberrans are sending to the ACT Government — we want our bush protected and no more destructive urban sprawl,” he said.

The council says more than 2700 people have backed its campaign calling for the Western Edge to be kept outside the proposed urban boundary.

Mr Copland said the government had yet to reveal where the boundary would be drawn.

“So, today we drew the line ourselves — with our dancing shoes,” he said.

The Conservation Council has previously called for the Western Edge to be removed from government development plans and protected for its ecological, cultural and recreational values.
