ALL new homes built in the ACT from October 2023 will be required to have seven-star efficiency ratings, following an update to National Construction Code agreed to by Australia’s building ministers today (August 26).
The meeting, which saw building ministers from each state and territory meet, agreed to raise the energy efficiency requirement from six stars to seven stars with a 12-month transition phase from the publication of the updated Code, set for release in October 2022.
The meeting also saw the ministers agree that all new homes will require minimum accessibility standards to improve mobility for older residents, those with disability and other factors.
ACT Minister for Sustainable Building and Construction, Rebecca Vassarotti has called the national reforms a “win for the community”.
“I made the ACT’s position clear to my fellow Building Ministers during the meeting, so I am delighted that a 12-month transition was agreed to,” said Vassarotti.
“The homes we build today will stand for many decades, so it is vital that we build homes that are climate-resilient, comfortable and accessible.
“We will ensure that industry is supported through these changes. I believe 12 months is sufficient time before the introduction of these new standards, giving them time to prepare and adjust.”
