Theatre/The Girl Who Glows. At The Street Theatre until July 21. Reviewed by ALANNA MACLEAN.
The Girl Who Glows is an intriguing show for the under 10s about a young girl who literally shines in the dark as she tries to prevent darkness from taking over.
The adults are not doing much and it’s time for the younger generation to take the lead.
The Street’s stage is littered with light and image producing gizmos, and the inventiveness by the three players is great.
Jess Ciampa plays Boy Jess, David Hewitt is David and both also carry a range of characters from dads and mums and outback creatures to a stunning looking couple of solemn curlews. Jess Green plays Girl Jess, the one that glows, with some deft use of a sketched figure outline that definitely glows (think the old sketch for The Saint if you are old enough).
There is a heap of energetic music as well as imagery and diverting characters encountered by Girl Jess.
If the show has a problem it’s a tendency to bog down into a little too much verbal explanation and discussion. The target audience did not seem to be getting too invested in the notion of fighting the dark and it was pretty clear from their questions and responses after the show that the chief interest seemed to be in finding out how the stage magic happens.
And that’s no bad thing for a holiday show.
