The ACT has fallen 1450 homes short of its National Housing Accord target ahead of its second anniversary, according to Master Builders ACT.
The industry body says about 6960 homes were approved in the ACT since July 2024, compared with the 8410 needed to meet the territory’s housing target.
Master Builders ACT chief executive Anna Neelagama said housing approvals had slowed to about 290 homes a month, down from 350 before the Accord and below the long-term average of 424.
She said planning delays, regulatory requirements and workforce shortages were slowing housing delivery and called for faster approvals and less red tape.
“Builders are ready to deliver more housing, but they are being held back by slow planning processes and increasing complexity,” Ms Neelagama said.
The group is calling for faster approvals, less red tape and a stronger construction workforce to help the ACT meet its housing commitments.
