Canberra Liberals say the ACT Government has issued almost 58,000 mobile phone camera fines worth more than $36 million without tracking error rates or conducting an independent review of the system.
Shadow minister Peter Cain said answers to Questions on Notice showed the government did not measure false identifications, record how many fines were issued in error or know how many infringement notices had been internally reviewed.
The government says artificial intelligence identifies potential offences before contractor staff and Access Canberra authorised officers make the final decision, and acknowledges human error is possible.
Mobile phone detection cameras were introduced in Canberra in February 2023, while infringements and demerit points for offences came in a year later at $514 fine and three demerit points.
In the year leading up to the infringements, the ACT government found over 56,000 drivers using mobile devices.
Mr Cain said the Liberals supported strong road safety enforcement but argued the system also needed to be transparent, accurate and accountable.
