Chief Minister Andrew Barr is leading an ACT Government trade mission to Vietnam this week aimed at expanding opportunities in international education, tourism, investment and clean technology.
The visit follows a trade mission to India earlier this year focused on education, tourism and sport.
Last year, Mr Barr undertook several overseas trips as part of the ACT Government’s international engagement activities, including trade and engagement missions to China in March, the Pacific region (including Fiji and NZ) in June and Japan in mid-2025, as well as a combined mission to Thailand and Singapore in October.
The ACT Government says the Chief Minister’s participation in the Vietnam mission will cost about $14,000, funded from the existing executive budget.
The delegation will meet universities, schools, research organisations, tourism operators and business leaders in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as part of efforts to attract more international students and visitors to Canberra. The ACT’s education and research sector contributes more than $3.3 billion annually to the Territory economy and supports around 20,000 jobs.
The program also includes meetings with Vietnamese company Vingroup, visits to VinUniversity and Vinhomes developments, and a sustainability roundtable focused on renewable energy and urban development.
Vietnam is one of Australia’s largest international student markets, with more than 32,000 Vietnamese students studying in Australia.
