The Canberra Liberals say Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry’s resignation is only the first step following the ACT Integrity Commission’s Operation Kingfisher findings, calling for further action over union influence in government procurement.
Opposition Leader Mark Parton said Berry had been held accountable under the Ministerial Code of Conduct after the commission found serious corrupt conduct by her former chief of staff during the Campbell Primary School procurement process.
The Liberals renewed claims that the project cost ACT taxpayers nearly $1 million more because of improper influence, and argued the findings raised broader questions about the role of the CFMEU and the Secure Local Jobs Code in government procurement.
The Opposition is calling for action against those found to have engaged in serious corrupt conduct, an end to CFMEU membership for cabinet ministers and ministerial staff, and reforms to the Secure Local Jobs Code. It argues the Integrity Commission’s findings show the need for wider changes to the ACT’s procurement system.
