The ACT Government has taken another step towards reopening Telstra Tower, signing a heads of agreement with Telstra and securing initial works approval from the National Capital Authority.
The agreement sets the framework for detailed planning, design, costing and operational work needed before final decisions are made on the tower’s redevelopment, including visitor attractions, community spaces and supporting infrastructure.
The government said the project would be shaped around the cultural significance of Black Mountain, Canberra’s identity, the history of the tower and Australia’s telecommunications story, with ongoing consultation involving Traditional Custodians.
The latest milestone follows last year’s ACT Budget, which included funding to support the revitalisation of Telstra Tower and negotiations with Telstra on its future. The government is aiming to reopen the landmark to the public in the summer of 2027-28, subject to further planning and approvals.
