Folk Festival gets $900,000 boost

Folk festival managing director, Lynne O’Brien.

THE National Folk Festival has received a $900,000 boost from the federal government, it was announced today (July 30) by Arts Minister Paul Fletcher.

According to the managing director of the festival, Lynne O’Brien, who declared herself “over the moon“, the $900,000 had come from the “Rise“ funding which had been set up for organisations severely impacted by COVID-19.

“Over the last two cancellations in 2020 and 2021 we pretty well used up a lot of our reserves – like many arts organisations we were running against the wind there for a minute,“ she told “CityNews”.

The 2022 National Folk Festival will go ahead at Exhibition Park in Mitchell over Easter 2022 with singer Katie Noonan, described by O’Brien as “absolutely fantastic, a fire ball of energy”, as artistic director.

O’Brien said the festival office had been keeping a low profile for a while but said “we’ve been working quietly and moving forward with some fantastic ideas and performers, which you will very soon hear about”.
