FRED Smith and band will present his song cycle on Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan as an Anzac-eve special. The first two sets of the concert will feature songs from Fred’s “Dust of Uruzgan” album and the final set will centre around material he wrote after working on the dramatic evacuation from Kabul in August 2021. Smith’s Alternative, Civic, 7.30pm, Sunday, April 24, book here

SOGGY patrons returned to their cars on Tuesday night when the Midnight Oil performance at Stage 88 in Canberra was thwarted by rain. Usually, Midnight Oil performs rain or shine, promoters say, but this downpour was too much. The Oils hope to stage an ACT concert at the end of the band’s Resist World Tour later in the year. All purchased tickets will receive a full refund.

RECORDER virtuoso Alicia Crossley will premiere seven new compositions by some of Australia’s leading female composers in her concert, “Bass Instincts”. Wesley Music Centre, Forrest, 5pm, Sunday, April 24. Book here

IN a new documentary, “When the Camera Stopped Rolling”, Jane Castle tells the epic tale of her mother – pioneering Australian filmmaker Lilias Fraser – her life, her career, their challenging relationship and the challenges women face working in the Australian film industry. National Film & Sound Archive, April 23, followed by a Q&A session and a screening of selected short films directed by Fraser. Bookings here
