ACT State Emergency Service crews worked through the night responding to hundreds of calls for help following a severe thunderstorm late yesterday afternoon (January 3).
Most of the 436 requests for help were from the Belconnen and Gungahlin regions, which were the hardest hit. ACTSES says large hailstones were reported in these areas.
Thirty-five crews from the ACT State Emergency Service, ACT Fire & Rescue, ACT Rural Fire Service, and Transport Canberra & City Services contributed to the storm response.
By 6.30 this morning overnight crews had completed 211 jobs. Emergency crews responded to fallen trees on homes and roads, fallen power lines, localised flooding, and water damage across Canberra.
Additional staff and volunteers joined the operation this morning (January 4) and ACTSES says the cleanup is expected to continue into the coming days.
For help during floods and storms, call the ACTSES on 132 500. In a life-threatening emergency call Triple Zero (000).
